Brothers Jean and Charles Henri Stern, defined the prevailing aesthetic and technical language of 20th-century modern horology with the launch of the 1526 Perpetual Calendar and the 1518 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. From 1934 onwards, the LeCoultre movement was replaced by Patek’s new in-house calibre, the 12”’120, developed under the direction of Jean Pfister, who was in charge of the technical department where these were created and was tasked with making the initial drawings for the new calibers – the first of which was the 12”’120.

At that point in time, Patek Philippe did not make its own movements, so this watch was powered by a Jaeger-LeCoultre mechanical caliber. (Two years later, in 1934, the brand created its own in-house caliber 12”’120 and that mechanical movement equipped the Calatrava watches of the time.)

Two years into the reference 96’s life, Patek began using its in-house movement the calibre 12”’120 and this became the reference 96 Calatrava’s beating heart from its introduction in 1934 until 1973. The watch was a simple and utterly timeless looking watch, with round case and Bauhuas-inspired less is more and form follows function aesthetic.The clever architecture of this watch’s hand-wound caliber 12-120 provides improved access to individual components.
